We can all agree, none of us want to be that weird neighbor that gives away the odd "treats" on Halloween night. You know what the neighbor...they give away Bic pens or vitamins instead of chocolates and suckers.
With child obesity rates at all-time highs, there must be a part of you that feels a little bit guilty dumping piles of sugar into the bags of plump little kids that ring your doorbell.
Instead of giving away the unhealthy mini Mars Bars this Halloween, why not give out something a little more healthy? Sure, it might be a little more expensive, but at least you'll sleep a little better knowing that you're not contributing to little Johnny having heart problems by the time he reaches 35.
Here are 10 healthy choice ideas to give out at Halloween:
1. Mini-Pack of Pretzels: Although this one does contain salt, and yes, refined flour, it's leaps and bounds ahead of the sugar stick or a bag of gummy worms. It is very low in fat, has no sugar, and has little or no chemicals.
2. 4-Pack of Crayons: Every kid loves to color, and you can never have enough crayons. Instead of helping the kids get fat, you'll be contributing to the expansion of their imagination and creativity. As long as the kids don't try to eat the crayons, you're not going to get any healthier than this.
3. Tattoos: No, not the real ones! The temporary ones. Every kid loves fake tattoos. Not only is it a healthy alternative, but the kids really enjoy them. If you're really lucky, maybe you'll annoy the parents that are passing out the sugar candies to your kids. Those temporary tattoos don't come off easily in the bath.
4. Mini-Pack of Sunflower Seeds: Although the sodium content is a little high, the kids aren't going to load up on them. Since it's a little more labor intensive than wolfing down a Snickers, they'll either quit from boredom or feel satiated and stop eating. The fats are also good, and they contain quite a lot of fiber.
5. Dark Chocolate: If you do decide to give away candy. make sure that it's dark chocolate. It's a much healthier choice that milk chocolate, with lots of antioxidants and iron. It's also less sweat than milk chocolate and doesn't affect their blood sugar levels as drastically. A Hershey's Dark Chocolate Kiss contains only 25 calories, which is probably less than the kid will burn while eating it and digesting it.
6. Fruit Roll-Ups: Curb the kids' sweet tooth with this sweet treat. Although it's not as good as a real piece of fruit, they usually contain about 1 gram of fiber for every 12 grams of carbohydrates.
7. String Cheese: You've got your protein, your calcium, and they're fun to eat. Beat that Smarties!
8. Chinese Finger Traps: Do you remember these bamboo puzzlers? Put their fingers in each end and the they won't be able to shovel the junk food in their mouths. You can buy these in bulk online for cheap.
9. Raisins: Although they are high in sugar, they are still about a hundred times more healthy that your typical chocolate bar. They also contain a healthy dose of antioxidants and fiber. Get the small boxed kind.
10. Energy/Granola Bars: Be very careful with these. Some of these bars are no better than the mini chocolate bars that most people hand out. There are lots of different ones to choose from. For example, Fiber 1 is a good healthy choice. A Kashi TLC bar contains 90 calories, is nutritionally balanced, and is really quite tasty. It also helps satisfy the sugar cravings.
