“I too worry that we won’t be able to meet the expectations people have built up for themselves” says Bashiok, Blizzard’s Community Manager.
Wow! In an industry where every marketing material and promotions campaign is about trying to convince people that their game is the next revolution in the industry, Blizzard is being refreshingly candid.
When I first read it, I was a little concerned. With Diablo 3 on the horizon of being released, and being a HUGE fan of its two predecessors, as many are, people are understandably excited about the new addition to the series. Diablo III is expected to be a thrilling hack-and-slash adventure with epic environments and awesome graphics.
So is this a reverse psychology marketing strategy of some sort, or are they really preparing us for a “Microsoft style” launch? You know, a product that’s been hyped up, delayed, delayed, and delayed again. When it finally gets released, we realize that its been thrown together at the last minute, is incredibly resource hungry, and full of bugs.

“Part of my job is managing people’s expectations, so…eh..stop it. Stop thinking about how awesome this game could be. Just imagine it’s a new M. Night Shyamalan movie. Sure Sixth Sense was amazing and Unbreakable had it’s moments, but this right here is the sequel to The Village…or The Happening…or Signs…or any of the movies besides the two I first mentioned. So just like, lower those expectations, but still definitely buy the game please, and everything will be just fine. K?” – Bashiok |

Its nice to see someone on the inside being honest about a product that has been anticipated by many for several years. But I’m not sure if I believe it just yet. Are they just trying to lower our expectations, so that when the general public finally gets to play the game, its so incredibly awesome that we all freak out with exuberance?
I know what I think. What do you think? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
